Obituary for Kenneth Drinkwater
ROCKLAND - Kenneth L. Drinkwater, 85, died peacefully, Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at Windward Gardens in Camden.
Born at Spruce Head, May 27, 1922, he was the son of Earl and Harlene Drake Drinkwater. Kenneth was raised by his grandparents at Hewitt's Island until he was a freshman in high school. His later teen years were spent following his father's Coast Guard Career between South Portland and Quincy, Massachusetts. He ultimately graduated from South Portland High School class of 1940, where he enjoyed participation on the track and swim teams.
Lobstering from a rowing skiff at age 12, after graduating, Ken continued in that work until enlisting in the United Sates Navy, August 13, 1942.
During his time in service with the military, Ken primarily served as a Chief Boatswain's Mate aboard LST 379. His service record carries a commendation from his commanding officer, "for extremely loyal and courageous performance of duty in action against the enemy in Tunisia, and through four major invasions: Sicily, Salerno, Anzio and Normandy".
Following his discharge, Ken returned to the Maine coast, residing in Spruce Head. There he married his first wife Margaret Norman. They raised their family in Spruce Head where Ken worked as a lobsterman for more than 40 years. During the late years of his lobstering career, he began Little Chief Boat Transport which he operated until retiring and turning that business over to his son in 1984.
After Margaret's death in 1972, Ken married Frances Gustin in Portland in 1975. Together they resided in Spruce Head a few years before moving to Rockland.
During his earlier adult years, he enjoyed bowling, playing baseball, and for several years was a member of the Rockland Golf Club where he regularly played.
An avid hunter, he not only enjoyed that sport with rifle, but also was accomplished with bow & arrow. For several years he held Maine's biggest buck record with bow.
Long interested in history, Ken researched his family's genealogy, collecting many pictures and genealogical records.
Predeceased by a sister Theran Milliken, a grandson Ryan Burch, and on Christmas day 2007, a step-son John Kirk, Ken is survived by his wife of 32 years, Frances Drinkwater of Rockland; his sons, Alan N. Drinkwater and his wife Diane, Clyde E. Drinkwater, all of Owls Head; two daughters Patricia Burch, Karen Thompson and her husband Peter all of Spruce Head; a sister, Marilyn Milliken of Falmouth; two brothers Ashley Drinkwater and his wife Dianna of Spruce Head, Lloyd Drinkwater and his wife Phyllis of Portland; a cousin who was like a brother, with whom he was raised Walter "Sonny" Drinkwater and his wife Edith of Spruce Head; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service at Achorn Cemetery, Rockland, will be announced in the spring.
