PRAIRIE CITY -- The funeral for Helen Elizabeth "Betty" Kent Drinkwater, a lifelong Prairie City resident, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in John Day. Burial will be at the Prairie City Cemetery in the Bogue Family Plot next to Alvan Bogue and her parents.
Mrs. Drinkwater, 83, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at her home in Prairie City.
She was born Nov. 11, 1919, in the old officers quarters of what was once Camp Logan located six miles up Strawberry Creek near Prairie City. Camp Logan had been located on what became a cattle ranch owned by her parents, Roger and Alma Kent.
She grew up on this ranch, attending a one-room school located on the hill one-half mile west of the ranch. She attended the school through the eighth grade, then the school was closed and she attended Prairie City High School.
After graduating from business college at Los Angeles, she returned to Prairie City where she renewed her acquaintance with Alvan Bogue. The couple were soon engaged and were married at Payette, Idaho in August 1940. Mr. Bogue had just completed college at the University of Oregon and was awarded a coaching contract at Hillsboro High School. With World War II taking a toll on young teachers, he was soon named athletic director and coach of the varsity football, basketball and track teams.
In 1945, they left Hillsboro to operate the ranch on Strawberry Creek. The couple were parents of two children, John and Judy.
After Mr. Bogue's death in 1954, she continued to operate the ranch in conjunction with her parents until their retirement in 1957.
On Jan. 23, 1963, she married Billy S. Drinkwater at Boise.
Mrs. Drinkwater was a faithful and devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Billy Drinkwater; her son, John Bogue; daughter, Judy Haguewood; stepchildren, Ronnie Drinkwater of Des Moines, Wash., Jean Greear of Boise and Jerry Drinkwater of Hermiston; 18 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her first husband; and by a stepson, Jay Drinkwater.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Redmond, Sisters, and Grant County Hospice Program, P.O. Box 730, Prairie City, OR 97869.
Bishop Funeral Chapel of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements.
